How does particulate matter get into where we live?
Particulate matter gets into where we live in many different ways, such as
- Particles from vehicle exhausts, power plants, or industry can enter through open or poorly sealed windows
- Particulate matter can also be brought into where we live on clothing and shoes
- Other sources are candles, vacuum cleaners, office equipment, fireplaces, cigarettes, cooking and frying
Why is particulate matter a problem indoors?
Studies completed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have shown that breathing in these particles for just a short period of time affects the death rates. Particulate matter has a negative effect in terms of cardiovascular and respiratory tract diseases. This primarily affects people with weak immune systems. For example, lung growth or lung function can be compromised in children exposed to high levels of particulate matter.

We get used to the conditions and only notice that the air is stale if we get a headache, become tired, or can no longer concentrate. Using CO2 measuring devices can help here.
